Penta wood treatment

What is pentacryl made of? Penta Wood Treatment and Log Homes. Edmunds and Company Log Home Restorations, LLC. Many log homes here in the Midwest have had this chemical applied to the exterior over the years. This product has the capability to treat green lumber as well as dry material.


Commonly used to treat timber bridges, retaining walls, guard rails posts, and other severe duty structures. This hot oil treatment is restricted to exterior use, and may be used for above ground and ground contact applications. Like other wood preservatives , penta is a pesticide, which acts against wood-destroying fungi and insects. About half the wood poles in the US are treated with pentachlorophenol, known as “ penta” in the trade.


PCP has been used as a herbicide, insecticide, fungicide, algaecide, and disinfectant and as an ingredient in antifouling paint. Some applications were in agricultural seeds (for nonfood uses), leather, masonry, wood preservation, cooling-tower water, rope, and paper. Its use has declined due to its high toxicity and slow biodegradation. Wood treatments are used to protect lumber from fungi, insects, UV damage, water damage and general wear. When treating wood , the proper balance of treatment solution must be monitored to ensure the highest quality while minimizing waste and excess cost due.

CHRONIC TOXICITY: Wood Dust:Epidemiologic studies of the furniture industry have shown an increased incidence of nasal tumors related to wood dust exposure. PCP is applied using pressure and high temperatures in specialized treatment cylinders. As a restricted-use pesticide, PCP is for sale and use by certified pesticide applicators only. When wood has been treated correctly, exposure (and therefore risk) to individuals living near PCP-treated utility poles is expected to be minimal. Wood preservatives used to chemically treat wood utility poles contain dangerous chemicals, including dioxins, which harm human health and the environment.


The last legal remaining use of pentachlorophenol (penta) is as a wood preservative in utility poles. This porch flooring has been treated with an EPA registered pesticide containing pentachlorophenol to protect from insect attack and decay. This flooring should only be used in a covered exterior location. The flooring has a flat front face and a recessed back.

When you check, there will be a tag on the treated lumber to tell what the treatment is and to what level it is. Propiconazole has been approved. It can be found as pure PCP, or as the sodium salt of PCP, the latter of which dissolves easily in water.

It is applied to pine poles by vacuum pressure treatment at a manufacturing facility with binding agents from hydrocarbons, including diesel fuel and kerosene. The formulation consists of at least 10-percent copper-8-quinolinolate, 10-percent nickel-2-ethylhexanoate, and 80-percent inert ingredients. It is accepted as a standalone preservative for aboveground use to control sapstain fungi and mold and also is used to pressure-treat wood.


Pre- treatment by dip method before installation is recommende also designed for protection of deck or porch floor end cuts. Allow wood to dry at least hours before installation. Cleans up with soap and water.
