Isolated ground

Isolated ground

An isolated ground (IG) is a local ground connection used with a supply, one of the common earthing arrangements used with domestic mains supplies. What does isolated ground mean? Can someone explain isolated ground? An isolated grounding (IG) system is often specified where there is a concern regarding electrical noise on the equipment grounding system causing operational problems for electronic equipment.

By incorporating an IG system as opposed to a solidly grounded (SG) system, one would be inclined to think that something had been done to fix potential problems. The Isolated Ground (IG) is a type of equipment ground that, in theory, reduces interference experienced by electronics and instrumentation from radio frequency (RF) noise, by connecting that equipment directly to the grounding terminal of the service equipment, without ever making contact with another metal component or grounded surface, that could potentially be serving as an antenna for airborne RF noise. In both cases, a separate insulate isolated equipment-grounding conductor can be installed from the equipment (a nonmetallic bushing isolates the metal raceway from the metal frame of the electronic equipment) or from the isolated ground receptacle (the ground pin of the receptacle is not connected to the yoke of the receptacle) back to the main service or the source of the separately derived system without being connected to metal boxes or subpanels.

It goes all the way back to the panel where it connects to the ground bar along with the other grounds but a fault travels the path of least resistance which would be to the created neutral. The Basics of Isolated Grounding Receptacles An isolated ground receptacle (IGR) can reduce electrical noise, but if installed incorrectly, it can create a dangerous installation. This receptacle differs in construction from its self-grounding counterpart. The grounding terminal for an IGR is insulated from its metal mounting yoke. The isolated ground is allowed to pass through panels without connecting to the grounding bus or metal casing.

It is best that the separate isolated ground conductor be taken back to the first panel after the transformer, and connected to the common ground bus bar. Isolated ground receptacles are intended to be used for reduction of electromagnetic interferences as previously reviewed in this article. These receptacles have a grounding terminal that is purposely insulated for connection to the isolated equipment grounding conductor of the branch circuit when installed in an outlet box. The primary reason for the use of isolated grounds (IG) is to provide a noise-free ground return, separate from the equipment grounding (EG) return.

The EG circuit includes all of the metal conduit, outlet boxes, and metal enclosures that contain the wiring and must be grounded to provide a safe return path in case of fault currents. In some cases, computers and networks can be affected by excessive electrical noise. Your computer freezes up, or your internet connection gets dropped frequently. It required you to run an insulated equipment-grounding conductor to the grounding terminal of a special receptacle.

Leviton MDT83-IGE Lev-Lok Tamper-Resistant, Hospital Grade, Isolated Ground , Lev-Lok 20-Amp, 1Volt, 2P, 3W, Modular Wiring Device Decora Duplex Receptacle, Black $26. Triple-wipe brass contacts ensure lasting, positive contact with plug blades. High-impact resistant nylon face resists impacts and scrapes.

Ideal where isolated or dedicated grounding is required. High strength, lightweight steel or aluminum armor. Features green grounds, solid green, with yellow stripe. Blue or silver armor with additional green stripe for easy identification. UL Classified for Through-Wall Penetrations.

Isolated Ground Receptacles — Grounding-type receptacles in which the grounding terminals are purposely insulated from the mounting means of receptacles and associated metal cover plates as permitted by Section 250. To be sure you are selecting the correct ground bar, divide the number of circuits in the panel by and pick the closest numbered ground bar. For example, a 20-circuit panel would require a GBK10P. Eaton is a trusted name in electrical products for over 175-years.

The method of using single grounding points (or star grounds) looks great on paper. An alternative approach is to use a grounded bus bar. Marine Grounding Systems. A large conducting body, such as the earth or an electric circuit connected to the earth, used as an arbitrary zero of potential. In a normal house on lan the problem of grounding is simple.

A lightning strike near the isolated triad ground will cause a voltage increase at the instrument ground conductor, and will almost certainly introduce an additional hazard from a touch voltage that would not occur if the instrument ground was tied to power ground via a dedicated connection.
