Chromated copper arsenate ( CCA ) is a wood preservative containing compounds of chromium, copper, and arsenic, in various proportions.

It is used to impregnate timber and other wood products, especially those intended for outdoor use, in order to protect them from attack by microbes and insects. CCA is composed of the oxides or salts of chromium, copper, and arsenic. The copper in the wood serves as the fungicide whereas the arsenic protects the wood against insects. The chromium fixes the copper and arsenic to the wood.

CCA can be separated into Type A, B, or C depending upon the relative proportions of metals (table I-1). It is a mix of chromium, copper and arsenic formulated as oxides or salts, and is recognizable for the greenish tint it imparts to timber. It is clean to work with, long-lasting, and relatively non-corrosive to metal hardware and fasteners. In fact, the largest problem with CCA is effectively one of perception because it contains arsenate, a naturally occurring form of arsenic.

This includes wood that will be in contact with water or immersed in (including saltwater), soil, concrete or masonry, subject to periodic wetting, or exposed to moisture or high humidity. The wood is dipped in a solution of CCA and subjected to vacuum pressure to force penetration of CCA into the wood. Most lumber pressure treated with CCA has a characteristic green tinge. However, as the wood weathers it becomes harder to distinguish from untreated wood.

To produce pressure-treated woo the milled lumber (typically pine or cedar) is saturated with chemical preservatives. These chemicals minimize the wood’s natural vulnerability to insects and rot,. Shop Decking Boards and Supplies!

CCA preservative protects lumber and plywood from decay and termite attack. Hoover follows up the treating process with an optional kiln drying process to gently remove the moisture added during treatment.

Swallowing arsenic is known to cause cancer in humans. Using ground contact pressure treated lumber above ground is nothing new. Chromated Copper arsenate (CCA) was a major source of treated wood since the 40s. Due to health concerns related to arsenic, manufactures discontinued producing CCA-treated wood for residential use.

This type of wood is pressure-treated with CCA , a chemical made up of chromium, copper and arsenic. The treated lumber is typically Southern yellow pine in the eastern United States and hem-fir in the West. In many places, burning treated wood is illegal because treated wood releases carcinogenic and toxic components to the air.

Nominal Product Thickness (in.) (2) (1) More Ways to Filter. Pressure Treated Lumber. Larger dimensional lumber (2×and above) can be treated to. CCA but only for use in certain commercial construction applications.

We usually recommend. CCA or ACQ) for freshwater use, ground contact, or extreme weather conditions,. Lumber Alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) and copper azole (CA) accepted CCA 's abdication of the outdoor- lumber throne with a fairly smooth transfer of power. CCA for projects in saltwater.

Both treatments provide similar, high levels of preservative power with arsenic-free chemicals. In order to achieve the preservative power of CCA , ACQ and CA ramp up the amount of copper used.
