Tongue drum plans

How to build a tongue drum? What is a tongue drum? On some tongue drums , the tone the tongues produce is varied by making each one a different length and width. They also take a fair amount of woodworking skill to assemble them and were really outside of the ability of most school age children. During my research into tongue drums , I learned that most really nice sounding drums are made using exotic hardwoods.

Determine the size of your completed drum and the number of tones you wish to produce. Make beautiful sounds by striking the slatted top of this six-note, easy-to-build instrument. Construct a solid wood box from straight grained hardwood. Padouk wood seems to work the best, but Mahogany or Rosewood may be substituted. Calculate an inch and a quarter wide section of lid for each tone.

The sides and bottom. This drum is made from a discarded propane tank. I've owned a tank drum for few years. I use strips of belt sander paper because it is tough and flexible. I built this custom stand a few years ago.

I buy tanks from the local welding supply. Step 2: Spinning and Grinding. Scally: It takes a couple of hours to cut all the parts and jig saw the tongues.
