Utile Wood Lumber, also commonly known as Sipo, is used as an alternative to other Mahogany species. Utile wood is used in flooring, fine furniture and cabinetwork, joinery, decorative veneers, plywood and boat construction. The primary species in this African market are Khaya(African Mahogany) and Sapele. The hardness of Utile is between that of African Mahogany and Genuine Mahogany, which also contributes to the ideal workability of Utile.

The timber of a few species is traded as a tropical hardwood. It is sometimes termed under the generic label of mahogany, and while Entandrophragma is part of the family Meliaceae, it is not classified as genuine mahogany. There are five woods from African considered as ‘Redwoods’ (Mahoganies or Mahogany looking and substitutes).

Theses woods are in order of cost from least to most: Okoume, Tiama (also known as Edinam), Sapele, African Mahogany (has several names), and Utile (Sipo). Utile tends to be heavy and strong overall. Like many timbers it also reacts to iron, and direct contact with the metal can cause the wood to become stained and discoloured - as such brass or stainless steel fixings are recommended.
