Red oak finish

Red oak is an open-grained hardwoo much like ash, walnut or mahogany. Whether flat-sawn or quarter-sawn, you need to apply grain filler if you’re interested in having a pore-filled finish. I typically use Sherwin Williams Sherwood Wiping stains which I apply by spray. I then spray a sealer and a medium rub pre-cat.

I finish sanding to 22 although the 1would be fine. Red oak flooring is a durable hardwood option that has a traditional straight grain and a hint of red or pink in the unfinished boards. Each layer should be sealed with shellac and sanded to improve the stain. Take your time while working and you may get the perfect finish on your red oak.


Red Oak is a very opened grain woo so if you put a color on it, the grain darkens while the new wood takes the intended color. It actually finishes pretty evenly and there really is no fear of color blotches. What is the best stain for red oak?
