Removing thinset from concrete

How to dissolve thinset? Can I use thinset to level concrete floor? Always use a putty knife with a hammer-end handle and sharp blade.


It will chisel the thinset off the cement like butter, they said. Then we’d sweep away the chunks. After that, we’d use the machine to grind down at the thinset that was left. The grinding process left a thick layer of dust on the floor.


I had my dust vac hooked up to the machine which I think just kept some of the dust out of the air. Works realky well for small areas like kitchens or bathroons. The larger chipping hammers are a pain to operate and the wide blades actually walk over the thinset so you need multiple passes. Just skim a new coat. First, protect everything. At the minimum, you should have protective eyewear because mortar. Step Two - Hammer and Chisel.

It went back to the store and we picked up another more stable machine. It was pretty intense, the tool had to be plugged into the oven outlet and a 1foot extention cord ran all the way downstairs to the machine. An angle grinder is one of the best thinset and tile removal tools around.

Continue working in small sections until the floor is clean. Old thinset mortar should be removed from a floor before installing new tile.


When you remove old floor tile, you will sometimes get small pieces of the thinset mortar to pull up along with the tile. Most times, however, once the tile is up, you are left with small mounds of thinset all over your subfloor. Rent a concrete grinder from say Home Depot, it will get the thinset off. Skim coat the floor smooth and you will be good to go.

Make sure you use a good shop vac with a bag and HEPA filter which you connect to the grinder. Fill a container with muriatic acid and soak the pieces in the solution if you need to remove thinset from porcelain tiles in a demolition project. Muriatic acid is a fast-acting acid that works well against cement-based materials.


Remove the pieces when they are clean of thinset and rinse them off with water. Most tilers attempt to remove the thinset as they work or the next day at the most. Go to a rental place and rent a floor buffer along with a carbide disc attachment specifically for removing thinset. You will have to to buy some plastic and tape off the area because it will be very very messy.

After you remove the tiles, chisel and scrape the adhesive off the concrete as well. If you can’t get it all, don’t worry.
