The spring is attached to a cable that runs over pulleys. How do you adjust the tension on a garage door? How to tighten Springs on garage door? Open your garage door fully.
Before you can work, you need to release the tension on the springs. Secure the door in place. Remove the spring.
Detach the old spring from both ends and replace it with the new one (and replace the pulleys as well if they are worn out). There are two main types of garage door springs. One is the torsion spring and the other is the side-mounted one.
I only discuss the adjustment of the torsional type here, as they are the ones that are most commonly used. Torsion springs are components that bear the whole weight of a garage door. If you are qualified to adjust a garage door spring , these are the steps you can take to make the adjustment. Determine Which Type of Spring is On The Garage Door. Side-mounted extension springs are easier to adjust than torsion springs.
The moveable end of each spring is attached to an adjustment collar. There isa set screw in the adjustment collar that locks the spring in a position oftension on the center shaft. The adjustment collar also has a series of holesaround its perimeter. This can make the other parts of the garage door last a much longer time.
You will need to insert a metal rod into one of theseholes. You must know the type of springs you are going to deal with. Depending on the problem the spring is causing, you will have a different solution.
Come up With the Solution. Adjust Side-Mounted Springs. To adjust extension springs , you will want the garage door open instead of closed. Unplug the opener and disconnect the door from the opener to release the tension from the springs. Then secure the door open by placing a c-clamp below the bottom roller.
You can now remove the spring from the track hanger. Refer to Figure TOR-for the configuration of x wood jambs. Step - Assemble the torsion springs to the spring tube. NOTE: You need an assistant in Step 4. Make sure the door doesn’t fall on you by securing the door with a c-clamp below the bottom roller. For extension springs this is in the up position.
To keep the door from falling, it must be clamped to hold it in place. Raise the door and release the garage door opener. To make the garage door rise with much the same ease as it did when it was first installe your first task is to release.
Disconnect the door from the automatic opener, using the disconnect cord. Move to the outside of the garage. If the door is hard to raise, the tension at the hinge springs is too.
NEVER use screwdrivers, pin punches or pliers handles to wind or unwind a torsion spring. Trust us: This is the best way. Keep the garage door opener disconnected from power.
