Rust hole repair

How to patch rusted metal? Because the rust hole was nearing the ledge under the gas tank door, part of my repair plan was to run the repair up under the plastic edge, to protect the repair from gas or water. This can be accomplished best using a fiberglass cloth kit purchased at any automotive supply store. While replacing large sections can be relatively easy, the smaller rust holes that do not warrant a full panel replacement are small enough that the average builder can tackle them and be back inside in time for dinner. All of the rust needs to be removed from the hole and the metal surrounding it.

Then, go back toward the center of the hole , scrubbing with heavy pressure to eliminate the rust. However, it is advisable to check those repaired rust holes from time to time and apply paint or coat as needed. Using a hammer, lightly tap in the edge of the hole. Start by drilling a small hole in the center of a backer and lay it over the rust. If you can’t see the hole through the backer you can shine a light directly on the back or from behind the hole and it should help you see better for tracing. Next up I used a pneumatic flanging tool that clamped its offset jaws onto the steel and gnawed around the hole so the steel patch had a recessed contact patch to sit flush in the adhesive for minimum body filler work. Rust holes are easily repaired using roof cement and a mesh patch. Wipe down the rust holes with a tack cloth. This is a task that most homeowners can do themselves in just a few hours.


Coat the area inside the hole thoroughly with Miracle Paint to prevent further rusting, then make a patch of layers of fiberglass mat soaked in Miracle Paint and apply it over the rust hole. Prepare - Mask the area, remove paint and rust. When dry overnight you will not believe how strong this repair. Scrape the rusted metal around the hole with a wire. Sand until the rust no longer comes off the lawn mower deck.
