There are several popular types of lumber: Pine : Relatively inexpensive and easy to fin it is usually used in furniture building and construction. Poplar : Used in cabinetmaking, painted furniture, ceiling moldings and trim. Choosing lumber can be tricky! This is the highest grade of lumber , used for its strength and durability.

Select Structural Lumber. You’ll find the least number of defects in this grade of lumber. Knots are permitted in certain sizes, as long as they are soun firm, tight, and well spaced.

With this grade of lumber , few defects are allowed. Because of the fine appearance of select yard lumber , it is intended for natural and painted finishes. Most select structural Douglas Fir is not this clear. Grades listed here are from highest to lowest.

Dimensional lumber is ideal for construction because it is lightweight, strong, and easy to work with. Cedar makes great raised garden beds, but if you were to use them for a deck, fence or patio you should use treated lumber at the base to give your projects a longer life. The select class of pine as defined by the North Eastern Lumber Manufacturers Association contains grades defined as C and D. Grade C is the highest grade of pine lumber and is commonly used for fine woodworking and interior trim. Clear-pine boards, such as these, have no knots, and carry a hefty price because of that.
