Afzelia burl

Pieces larger than x x are considered large for the species. Color tends to darken with age. Similar in appearance to Amboyna Burl, but can be harder to obtain.

The most common afzelia burl material is wood. Most pieces of African afzelia are unfigured lumber, while burls and figured pieces with pommele or blister figure are usually Asian afzelia. There are afzelia burl for sale on Etsy, and they cost $79. You guessed it: brown.


Southeast Asian Iron Burl wood combines figure and burl with warm Amboyna-like colors! Bark incursions and checks may be present in some pieces. Most blanks are dry but may contain residual moisture. Well defined sapwood is a pale yellowish white. This deep impression lace pattern is reminiscent of tunnels forged within an ant colony and is instantly recognizable.

The thirteen species all are trees, native to tropical Africa or Asia. This wood has figure that is like Amboyna burl and its color ranges from light to dark reddish orange. The highly-figured wood of the Asian species, Afzelia xylocarpa, is sold as Afzelia xylay. Burl (British bur or burr) is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner.


It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. Pieces with burl or highly figured grain are also seen, with the latter sometimes being called xylay pattern. Identification: Wood is diffuse porous, with few large to very large sized pores. Parenchyma around the large pores tends to be vasicentric, lonzenge, and confluent.

The figure of this of this beautiful exotic resembles that of an alligator skin and is often sought after by knife handle and grip makers alike. Afzelia Xylay is a very rare species found in Laos or Cambodia.

Ambonya burl is incredibly sough after, with prices being driven up by veneer makers, guitar makers, turners and all manner of wood workers. The burl actually comes from the Narra tree, a humble member of the paduak family. The wood is dense, hard and takes an amazing finish.


Afzelia is prized for its quality woo its bark, which has many medicinal uses, and its nitrogen-rich leaves, which enrich the soil. It has a pleasant smell reminiscent of baked goods. Unfortunately, this species extremely rare and top grade Afzelia is hard to come by.
