Depending upon size, Western Red Cedar is classified as Light Framing, Structural Joists and Planks, Beams and Stringers, or Posts and Timbers. In general, the grades referred to herein are rough sawn. Light Framing is lumber 2″ to 4″ (mm to 1mm) thick and 2″ to 4″ (mm to 1mm) wide either rough sawn or surfaced four sides (S4S). Lumber is graded based on the quality and appearance of the wood. These depend on various factors like the type of wood used and the number and types of defects, if any. Before we get into the different grades of lumber, let’s take a look at the various defects you may find in a piece of lumber.


Cedar lumber grades

All aspects of manufacturing and quality control are performed to the highest standards of the lumber industry. Red Cedar Lumber products are available rough surface kiln-dried or unseasoned and smooth or with a re-sawn texture. Some companies may supply this grade of Western Red Cedar with knots glued on the reverse face and there is typically a percentage of Quality Knotty included in an order. Clear cedar is not commonly used for building fences because of the much higher cost.


The most popular softwoods are cedar , fir, pine and spruce. When you shop for lumber , you may notice two sizes listed: common and actual. The cost varies regionally, though, and in areas where cedar is more prevalent, its cost will be lower, although never as low as that of pressure-treated pine.

The first is the National Lumber Grades Authority. This is a Canadian organization, which is important, because much of the world’s highest-quality Western Red Cedar siding is sourced from the sustainably-managed forests of British Columbia. In fact, the NLGA is the only recognized rules-writing body for lumber grades and standards in Canada. We do NOT generally recommend cedar lumber for structural purposes.
